MASTER WELDER - 2ND SHIFT
Location: Houston, Westplain Campus
Work Environment: Monday - Friday
Work Schedule/Hours: 2:30pm to 12:30am (Second shift)
Pay Range: $31 - $35/hour based on experience (PLUS SHIFT DIFFERENTIAL OF $1.50/HOUR)
Job Summary
Master Welders interprets blueprints, specifications, diagrams, or schematics to determine appropriate welding process. Joins, fabricates, and repairs metal and other weldable material by applying appropriate welding techniques and operating various welding devices. Master welders are familiar with and complies with all safety requirements and protocols for working in a hazardous environment. Inspects completed welds to determine structural soundness.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Welding various metals using processes such as SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and GTAW.
- Checking the fit of pipe or other structural pieces and to allow for proper attachment and to account for shrinkage.
- Welding in 2g, 4g, and 6g conditions.
- Operates Heli arc welding equipment for x-ray welding work.
- Moves and positions castings for various jobs.
- Changes gas cylinder and uses correct welding gas for different alloys.
- Repairs castings, gouges, and leaks
- Visually checks completed work for adherence to governmental specifications.
- Repair products by dismantling, straightening, reshaping, and reassembling parts using cutting torch, straightening press and hand tools.
- Welding using the Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), Gas Meta Arc Welding (GMAW), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) processes, on carbon, stainless steel, and aluminum structural shapes, tubing, and piping.
- Must have knowledge of the use of both acetylene and electrical welding equipment, welding standards and trade procedures, processes, and techniques.
- Identify and perform major and minor equipment repairs utilizing strong mechanical ability and welding experience.
- Inspect and maintain gas equipment, including changing gauges, repairing hoses.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must be able to assist pipe fitters in pipe installation, preparation, and fabrication while not actively welding.
- Must successfully pass all weld test.
- Must be able to read blueprints and other engineering drawings to perform efficiently.
- Must be able to read and interrupt technical manuals as applicable.
- Formal training in area of specialty.
- Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent.
- Attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline.
- Works under moderate supervision.
- Requires 5-10 years of related experience.
- Fitting and blueprint reading skills.
- Welding symbols
- Geometry
- Physical properties of metal machining
- Properties and characteristics of metals used for cutting.
- Safety precautions related to occupational hazards.
- Understand Weld shrinkage and welding techniques.
- Welding and forming objects and of various welding fluxes and rods.
- Ability to learn applicable codes and safety.
- Excellent attention to detail and communicative skills
- Must have the ability to use hand and power tools and related types of equipment peculiar to the trade.
- Welding certification may be required.
Education and Experience
- A high school diploma or GED equivalent
- 5 - 10 years experience
