UPMC Neurosciences Institute – Neurology West 2005 Technology Parkway, Suite 400, Mechanicsburg, PA 17050
UPMC Neurosciences Institute is seeking a compassionate, patient-focused Professional Staff Nurse, Outpatient RN to join our growing Neurology West team in Mechanicsburg. This position offers a unique opportunity to work in a fast-paced specialty practice while providing exceptional care and education to patients with neurological conditions.
The ideal candidate will be a collaborative team member who enjoys patient education, clinical coordination, and developing specialized skills within neurology. This role supports a high-volume practice and works closely with providers, clinical staff, and patients to ensure the delivery of outstanding care.
Schedule
- Monday through Friday
- 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM
- May leave at 4:00 PM on Fridays if additional hours were worked throughout the week
- No holidays
- No weekends
- Travel required to other practice locations based on staffing and operational needs
- May assist other practices as needed
- Potential for one work-from-home day following successful completion of training, based on patient volume, staffing, and departmental needs
Purpose:
The Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse is a member of the care delivery team. The Professional Staff Nurse is responsible to set the standards for the level and quality of care. The Professional Staff Nurse has responsibility, authority and accountability for the provision of nursing care. The Professional Staff Nurse manages and provides patient care activities for a group of patients and their families through the application of independent judgment, communication and collaboration with all team members. The Professional Staff Nurse establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with physicians, other health care providers, patients and their families, to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care. The Professional Staff Nurse demonstrates a commitment to the community and to the nursing profession.
Responsibilities:
- Actively participates in department- or practice-specific quality improvement initiatives. Identifies opportunities for quality improvement and collaborates with colleagues and leadership to implement enhancements. Takes personal responsibility for improving patient satisfaction and the overall quality of care and service. Utilizes research and evidence-based practice to support improvements in clinical care by identifying research topics, articles, and best practices related to the clinical specialty or areas of interest.
- Demonstrates the ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, advanced practice providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients and families. Works effectively within a complex environment, managing multiple priorities and specialized equipment. Exercises sound clinical judgment and strong critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills related to patient care. Utilizes critical thinking skills to guide and support others in applying the nursing process. Maintains the mobility, visual acuity, manual dexterity, and physical stamina required for frequent walking, standing, lifting, and patient positioning.
- Demonstrates knowledge of adult learning principles, and when applicable, pediatric teaching principles, and applies them in educating patients, families, students, and new staff. Provides comprehensive and appropriate education to patients and families to effectively guide them through their care both in the office setting and through phone or written communication. Supports the development of students, new staff members, and colleagues. Fosters an environment of open dialogue, inquiry, and continuous learning by seeking feedback and incorporating it into practice improvement.
- Formulates patient-centered goals and plans of care that recognize the patient as a partner and address individual needs holistically. Triages patient situations and coordinates care with physicians and other healthcare team members. Assists physicians with all aspects of patient care, including assessment, evaluation, and education. Demonstrates critical thinking in identifying clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual needs throughout the episode of care. Communicates effectively and clearly articulates patient conditions to other care providers while making recommendations for changes in patient care and office practices. Maintains comprehensive documentation that promotes communication and continuity among caregivers. Incorporates national professional organization standards, business unit goals, and health system initiatives to improve patient safety, quality, and satisfaction. Creates a caring, compassionate, and patient-focused experience by building strong relationships with patients, families, and colleagues.
- Demonstrates accountability for professional development that enhances the quality of professional practice and patient care. Actively participates in practice-based shared governance, goal setting, and change initiatives that improve the patient care experience and practice environment. Serves as a highly engaged and collaborative member of the care team, readily assisting colleagues and supporting team goals. Participates in initiatives that improve patient outcomes and strengthen the professional practice environment. Embraces change and demonstrates flexibility throughout the change process.
- Develops and maintains productive working relationships both internally and externally by demonstrating accountability, enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment to patients and colleagues. Demonstrates an understanding of cultural differences and promotes respectful, healthy workplace relationships. Maintains an appropriate balance between professional and personal responsibilities. Models safe work habits, effective time management, and a healthy lifestyle. Communicates any identified workplace safety concerns to peers and leadership in a timely manner.
- The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.
- They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.
- Minimum six months experience preferred.BSN preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- UPMC approved national certification preferred.
- Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse either in the state where the facility is located or in a state covered by a licensure compact agreement with the state where the facility is located.
- CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
- Graduate nurses must complete licensure examination within SIX MONTHS of hire or within one year of graduation, whichever comes first.
- Though temporary permits are valid for one year from the date of graduation, not one year from issue of permit (or until the results of the examination are known at which time it becomes null and void), UPMC requires that GNs take the licensure examination within 6 months of their start date or they will be terminated or demoted from the GN position, at the discretion of the BU.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Registered Nurse (RN) OR Temporary Practice Permit (TPP)
- Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
- Act 33 with renewal
- Act 34 with renewal
- Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal
*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
