About the Role
As a Middle School Humanities Teacher at Van Avery Prep, you will inspire students to explore literature, history, culture, and the human experience through rigorous, inquiry-driven learning. You will create an engaging, structured classroom environment where students strengthen their reading, writing, research, discussion, critical-thinking, and communication skills.
In this role, you will design and deliver differentiated, standards-aligned instruction that integrates English language arts and social studies while deepening students’ understanding of diverse texts, historical contexts, cultures, and perspectives. Through close reading, analytical and creative writing, research, discussion, collaborative inquiry, and meaningful projects, you will help students connect classroom learning to enduring questions and the world around them.
You Will…
- Plan and deliver engaging, standards-aligned humanities instruction for middle school students, integrating English language arts, literature, history, and social studies as appropriate to assigned courses
- Design cohesive learning experiences that help students examine literature, historical events, cultures, ideas, and diverse perspectives through inquiry and discussion
- Develop students’ skills in close reading, analytical and creative writing, research, source evaluation, evidence-based reasoning, discussion, and presentation
- Use inquiry-based instruction, seminar-style discussion, primary and secondary sources, and project-based learning to help students explore compelling questions and make meaningful connections across disciplines
- Differentiate instruction, materials, and support to meet varying academic needs, learning styles, and levels of readiness
- Establish clear classroom routines and maintain a safe, inclusive, and academically purposeful learning environment
- Assess student progress through formative and summative measures, maintain accurate records, provide constructive feedback, and adjust instruction based on learning needs
- Communicate consistently with families regarding student progress, classroom expectations, accomplishments, and areas for continued growth
- Collaborate with fellow teachers, specialists, and school leadership to support interdisciplinary learning and a cohesive student experience
- Maintain an organized classroom, supervise students responsibly, manage instructional materials and resources, and follow all school policies and health and safety procedures
What We Are Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Literature, History, Social Science, Humanities, Education, or a related field from an accredited institution
- California teaching credential preferred
- Prior experience teaching middle school humanities, English language arts, history, or social studies courses preferred
- Strong knowledge of literature, writing instruction, historical inquiry, research, source analysis, discussion-based learning, project-based learning, and developmentally appropriate middle school instruction
- Ability to differentiate instruction and support students with varying academic needs and levels of readiness
- Strong classroom management, communication, organization, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to build positive relationships and communicate effectively with students, families, colleagues, and school leadership
- Commitment to creating an inclusive, academically rigorous learning environment that fosters curiosity, empathy, thoughtful discourse, collaboration, and intellectual independence
- Ability to pass a state and federal background check
