Underwriter / Clearance Officer
Reports to: Legal Manager
Department: Legal
POSITION SUMMARY
The Underwriter / Clearance Officer provides expert underwriting guidance to clients and internal teams, drives title clearance, and resolves complex title insurance matters while delivering a high level of customer service.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Evaluate the company's ability to insure transactions; assess risk and determine insurability.
- Analyze files for clearance and provide a detailed review of the preliminary title report, confirming all required documentation is in place.
- Work with clients and internal teams to obtain the clearance needed for transactions to proceed to closing.
- Review entity, trust, and estate documents and payoff letters for compliance and accuracy for title purposes.
- Assist clients with uninsured matters, including municipal searches, and provide guidance to resolve issues.
- Prepare closing affidavits that meet title insurance standards.
- Obtain high-liability approvals and ensure all policy language and endorsements meet company guidelines.
- Review closing documents for proper language, recitations, and exhibits; submit FinCEN paperwork as required.
- Oversee delivery of closing documents and checks for remote or partial closings, coordinating with all relevant parties.
- Resolve post-closing issues in collaboration with Escrow and Recording.
- Partner with Recording and Escrow on document formatting, recording issues, and wire confirmations.
- Guide internal teams through complex title and non-title issues.
- Mentor colleagues across departments on clearance and title insurance procedures.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships and resolve title-related concerns.
- Stay current on changes to laws, regulations, and best practices in the title insurance industry.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 2–4 years of title insurance or related legal experience.
- College degree preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and title insurance software; quick to learn new systems.
- Proven ability to deliver excellent customer service and resolve complex title issues.
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and delegate as needed.
