About Role

Internship: Accounting and Claims 

Location: Edina, MN 

Compensation: $20/hr + overtime 
Deadline to apply: Friday 16th October 

Introduction 

Working with our reinsurance team in North America you’ll learn more about reinsurance broking, risk mitigation solutions, claims decision making and support our teams, doing real work for Howden Re's current and prospective clients. 

What you’ll be doing 

Reinsurance is a complex world; the easiest way to think about it is that it’s insurance for the insurers. Working with our teams, you’ll help insurance companies protect their futures, and the people they insure. 

You’ll be working with our clients who have suffered a loss, and you’ll work with the reinsurers to see the claim through to a conclusion, all the way through to our clients receiving funds. 

On a day-to-day basis you’ll: 

  • Work with the team to perform all reinsurance accounting functions for selected client accounts and provide backup coverage for other accounts as needed 

  • Work with the team to receive initial loss notices, loss status updates and proofs of loss from clients and forward to applicable reinsurers 

  • Confirm coverage under treaty; review contract wording for retention & limit, LAE treatment, loss reporting requirements, loss attachment basis, etc 

  • Prepare / review loss calculations to ensure accuracy and compliance with contract terms 

  • Process claims transactions in accounting and claims system 

  • Track the status of reinsurer settlements 

Who we’re looking for 

You’ll be working towards a Bachelor’s degree in any subject, ideally with a focus on accounting. You’ll be able to clearly communicate your thoughts and ideas both in writing and in person. And be able to handle multiple tasks and projects at the same time in a client service, deadline-driven environment. 

You will: 

  • Actively pursuing a Bachelor’s degree 

  • Be a rising senior (graduating in December 2027 or by June 2028)

  • Have a GPA of 3.0+ 

  • Be proficient in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint 

  • Pay close attention to detail, because every small detail matters 

  • Legally authorized to work in the US
