Position Summary:

The Mechanical and Industrial Engineering department seeks a new full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor Mechanical Engineering - Aerospace. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate engineering courses and labs, engaging in professional development activities, and providing services to the department and the university. The department is seeking candidates with the ability to teach in at least one core area of mechanical engineering. In addition, special consideration will be given to candidates with demonstrated ability and interest to develop and teach aerospace-focused courses in any combination of areas, including but not limited to Aerodynamics, Aerospace Propulsion, Flight Dynamics and Control, Space Systems, and Aerospace Structures. This is a full-time, benefit-eligible position with a 9-month academic appointment starting fall 2027. The salary range for this position is $76,000 - 80,000, commensurate with experience.The Universities of Wisconsin has a nationally top ranked retirement plan (plan URL) and a comprehensive benefits package (package URL). Key Job Responsibilities:

The primary duty will be teaching undergraduate courses in Mechanical Engineering in different modalities; additionally, this position will require the creation of two or more technical elective courses that may lead to the creation of an aerospace engineering emphasis area or minor. Mechanical engineering faculty members are expected to participate in curriculum development, academic assessment, and professional development which among other things may include undergraduate research and scholarly activities, as well as university/community service. 

Mechanical engineering faculty serve as academic advisors and are expected to work with colleagues across campus in cross-disciplinary collaborations outside the classroom. Additionally, faculty may have the opportunity to teach graduate level courses as part of our online MS Engineering program.

Required Qualifications:

• PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or a closely related field, earned by the start date of the position.

• Ability to utilize pedagogies that are proven to increase students’ engagement and retention.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

• Record of professional development, or willingness to develop in areas related to teaching, research, or scholarly work.

• Ability and interest in teaching/developing courses in aerospace related systems.

About Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at University of Wisconsin-Platteville:

Mechanical Engineering is the largest major at UW-Platteville. It currently has 19 tenured/tenure-track faculty and 7 instructional academic staff serving approximately 1000 students and graduating about 190 annually. The program is primarily based on the Platteville campus, with an additional 60-100 students enrolled through the online, asynchronous Platteville Engineering Partnership (PEP) Program. Our department offers a hands-on, experiential education, and our graduates are highly sought after across Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, and beyond. We maintain strong, long-standing partnerships with the industry throughout the region.

The program is housed in a new state-of-the-art engineering facility. The Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department emphasizes interdisciplinary coursework, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and modern inclusive pedagogy.
