Position: Welder - 1st shift
Team: Fabrication Team
Primary Objective of Position:
A Welder is responsible for setting up, fabricating and welding complex parts using various welding processes. A Welder works with a high degree of detail adhering to safety and quality standards. This role also performs flat copper welding used in the fabrication and repair of large electric motors and generators, ensuring weld quality and dimensional accuracy.
Skills Matrix:
The Welder position is part of the Fabrication Team Skills Matrix. This position works as a team member utilizing and performing to the Fabrication Team Skills Matrix, which outlines the comprehensive skills in the Fabrication Team.
Major Areas of Accountability:
• Set up and fabricate a wide variety of components using various welding processes, primarily GTAW, FCAW and GMAW.
• Perform flat copper GTAW welding using semi-auto and occasionally manual processes on bus bars, conductors, and other copper components used in the manufacturing and repair of electric motors and generators.
• Prepare copper materials by cleaning, fitting, beveling, and positioning components to ensure proper weld quality and conductivity.
• Inspect copper welds for quality, penetration, dimensional accuracy, and conformance to engineering specifications.
• Use oxygen-acetylene, oxygen-natural gas, plasma arc and carbon-arc equipment to heat, straighten, trim and bevel ferrous and non-ferrous material.
• Read drawings and routings to determine method, sequence of operation, position, tolerances and welding specifications, including proper filler materials, fluxes and weld machine settings.
• Interpret engineering drawings and work instructions related to copper fabrication and welding.
• Make all necessary layouts and setups using proper tools and fabricating equipment.
• Uses portable electric or air driven grinding or chipping equipment.
• Perform self-inspection and documentation of welded components.
• Provide feedback on rejected welded components and may determine disposition of rework for rejection reports.
• Work in other areas of the Fabrication Team Skills Matrix and may perform additional fabrication and brazing operations.
• Lift and move materials using forklift, pallet jack, overhead crane or jib crane.
• Demonstrate a commitment to Continuous Improvement by identifying opportunities in day-to-day work.
• Perform work in accordance with ISO 9001 Quality Standards and comply with OSHA and EPA regulations.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
• 1-2 year welding degree or High School diploma with a minimum of 3 years of relevant welding experience.

• Ability to use precision measuring tools and inspect weld quality to engineering specifications.
• Ability to be certified in overhead crane, jib crane, and forklift operation.
Physical Requirements:
• Routinely lifts and moves objects up to 50 lbs.
• Occasionally ascends/descends ladders and stairs.
• Occasionally works at heights or on platforms.
• Routinely positions self in various work spaces, including low, tight or confined spaces.
• Routinely remains in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time.
• Routinely uses repetitive motions including the wrists, hands or fingers to operate machinery or tools.
• Routinely handles copper bars, conductors, fabricated assemblies, and welding equipment.
• Occasionally moves from one work station to another to accomplish tasks.
