Full job description
We are seeking a Senior Civil Engineer (PE) to serve as a technical lead and project manager for civil/site projects including site design, grading, utilities, and stormwater management. This role is responsible for leading design from concept through permitting and construction, managing scope/budget/schedule, and coordinating directly with clients and agencies on a mix of public and private work. The ideal candidate brings strong technical judgment, a collaborative leadership style, and experience navigating complex review environments; NYC/NYS or NJ agency experience is strongly preferred.
The salary range for this role is $115-$160k; depending on experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership (Site/Civil): Lead the civil/site design on multiple projects for grading, drainage, stormwater management, and utility systems (storm, sanitary, domestic water, and related appurtenances), ensuring constructability and code/criteria compliance.
- Design Deliverables & QA/QC: Direct and review the development of construction documents (plans, profiles, details, and quantities), engineering calculations, and technical narratives/reports. Provide disciplined QA/QC and seal/sign deliverables as appropriate.
- Permitting & Agency Coordination: Manage permitting strategy and submittals (e.g., stormwater/SWPPP, site connection/utility approvals, erosion & sediment control) and lead responses to agency comments. Coordinate with applicable agencies and utility providers; NYC agency coordination is highly valued.
- Project Management: Manage scope, schedule, budget, and risk for assigned projects. Prepare and track work plans, staffing, and deliverable milestones; support contract change management and internal reporting.
- Client-Facing & Team Leadership: Serve as a day-to-day client contact, lead meetings, and communicate technical recommendations clearly. Mentor and direct junior staff and coordinate with other disciplines to deliver integrated solutions.
- Business Development Support: Support proposals and interviews by developing technical approaches, scopes of work, assumptions, and fee estimates; help identify follow-on opportunities and initiate new opportunities through strong client service.
Minimum Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
- Licensure: Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required. Ability and willingness to obtain additional state licensure as needed.
- Experience: Typically 8+ years of progressive civil/site engineering experience with demonstrated responsibility leading design and producing permit and construction documents (site design, grading, utilities, stormwater) for public and/or private projects.
- Leadership: Proven ability to lead technical teams, manage multiple projects, and communicate effectively with clients, agencies, and internal stakeholders.
- Technical Depth: Experience with green infrastructure/stormwater BMPs, hydrologic/hydraulic analysis, and utility conflict resolution in dense urban environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- NYC Agency Experience: Strong familiarity with NYC public work and approval pathways (e.g., NYCDEP site connections/SWPPP, NYCDOT roadway/ADA interfaces, NYC Parks/EDC/NYCHA coordination) and responding to complex review comments.
- NJ Agency Experience: Familiarity with NJ agencies and approval processes (e.g., NJDEP, SCDs, local municipalities) and preparing/responding to review comments.
- Software Proficiency: Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D; MicroStation and stormwater/hydraulics tools such as HydroCAD, Hydraflow/Storm Sewers, HEC-HMS, and/or HEC-RAS are a plus.
- Construction-Phase Support: Experience supporting construction administration (RFIs/submittals, field coordination, inspections) and partnering with contractors on design-build or fast-track delivery.
- Licensure: Additional active PE licenses (multi-state) and/or ability to quickly obtain comity licensure.
