Essential Job Qualifications

Education:  High school graduate. Attended a Medical Assistant program or a PCT program from an accredited school preferred.

Experience:  Some work experience in a hospital setting or medical office as a Medical Assistant or PCT is required if not MA certified. New grads without MA work experience must have the MA or PCT certification from an accredited school. Experience using an electronic medical records system; EPIC preferred.  Phlebotomy experience a plus.

Training/Certification: MA or PCT certification required for new grads with no MA work experience.  American Heart Association BLS certification required.

Licensure:  N/A

Other: Must be willing to train at more than one office in order to provide occasional coverage at other offices.  Employee must be able to prepare short correspondences and memos and effectively present information to physicians, physician extenders, patients and employees of the medical practice.  Employee must be thorough documenting accurate information in an electronic health record.

Essential Functions

  • Prepare examination rooms and patient charts.
  • Escort patients to rooms; prepare patients for examinations.
  • Accurately record height, weight and blood pressure from the patient visit; chart or enter in electronic health record and graph findings.
  • Ask patient or guardian about reason for visit and document.
  • Prepare charts for upcoming patient visits with proper paperwork necessary for the visit.
  • Perform vision and hearing screenings as requested by Physician or provider.
  • Assist physicians and physician extender(s) as needed with sick visits, preventive care visits, and paperwork preparation, as needed.
  • Clean and restock rooms and equipment as needed on a daily basis by end of day.
  • Assist with securing referrals and making specialist or test appointments.
  • Relay messages to patients as may be required by physicians or physician extender(s).
  • Assist the front desk staff as necessary with answering phones and filing.
  • Perform phlebotomy by venipuncture or finger stick.
  • Prepare for urine culture and analysis.
  • Prepare for and run strep tests and all other laboratory tests.
  • Assist physicians, physician extender(s) and nurses with procedures.
  • Prepare instruments for autoclave.
  • Assist with bringing charts to and from the front desk if applicable.
  • Prepare new patient charts.
  • File patient visit documents and notes.
  • Support the front desk with Receptionist responsibilities.
  • Document within the electronic health record (EHR) accurately and thoroughly, when available.
