Position Summary
To heat treat parts, tools, and materials involving carburizing, plating, hardening, tempering, annealing, stress relieving, Babbitt, nitriding, brazing, and soldering. To operate straightening press to correct deflection in bars, shafts and rotors by application of heat and/or pressure. To prepare bearing metals and parts and pour to make parts. To prepare surfaces for phosphatizing, molly coating, and dalic plating. To cut material to length per the Route Tag.

To prepare surfaces for phosphatizing, molly coating, and dalic plating. To cut material to length per the Route Tag.
Principal Activities
- Saw material to length
- Pour molten metal into housings for shop to machine
- Complete quality forms and other required paperwork
- Maintain a clean, safe, efficient work area
- Set up induction heaters; run trial heats; determine necessary voltage, current, frequency, feeds, speed, type of induction coil and water flow. Check sample piece for hardness and distortion; interpret samples for correct hardening technique. Run sufficient samples with automatic cycle to produce exact timing, regulating and setting induction coil sizes; position before running off repeat jobs.
- Prepare and perform nitriding, gas carburizing, hardening, tempering, annealing and normalizing operations such as painting, racking, loading, unloading, and cleaning.
- Read thermometers, ammeters, voltmeters, indicating and recording instruments; use measuring equipment.
- Position centers and supports on straightening press to hold work piece; position work piece, using lifting equipment as required. Select maximum deflected point or points using dial indicator; apply proper pressure to correct deflection, heating with gas torch as required. Scrape, lap, or grind work centers as necessary.
- Weigh parts to be babbitted; operate and regulate heat controls on equipment to clean, rinse, acid dip and hand tin parts.
- Set parts to be cast in position; pack and pre-heat for pouring; pour proper amount of bearing metal and other mixtures as designated, into molds; remove casting from mold.
- Obtain metals and other material as directed.
- Move parts to be phosphatized, molly coated or dalic plated; mix fillers and maintain proper consistency; apply molly to surfaces of parts; place treated parts into oven; using a bath and an electrode (dalic plating)
- Apply silver, babbitt, copper, etc., to all types of parts. After cleaning apply phosphate to parts.
- Recognize and immediately correct without assistance for improper application of filler, molly, phosphate or plating.
- Remove burrs and sharp edges; mark, identify, preserve and protect parts as directed.
- Record all necessary data on jobs as required.
- Keep work areas clean and orderly.
- Will use material handling equipment.
- Recognize and immediately correct, without assistance, for difficulties and errors or cause to have corrected if fault is due to machines, equipment or material.
- Perform above duties without assistance except on unusual or difficult jobs only. Consistently produce work of proper quality and of properly required quantity.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
- Be able to use basic measuring equipment scales, tape measures and read rulers to a 1/32"
- Basic math skills required
- Required to follow written and verbal instructions
- Self-driven and able to self-manage
- Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs unassisted
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
