Safety Engineer
Safety Engineer
Under the direction of the Regional Safety leader, the Safety Engineer plans, develops, and directs Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) activities for an assembly plant in the Cleveland, OH area. This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with DFM Solutions and customer safety requirements while supporting subcontracted operations, including paint booth cleaning and janitorial services. The Safety Engineer serves as the site subject matter expert for confined space safety and is responsible for developing, implementing, and delivering training programs for both DFM and subcontractor personnel.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
* Lead the site's Environmental, Health & Safety program in accordance with DFM Solutions and customer requirements.
* Conduct routine safety observations, audits, inspections, and layered process audits.
* Support daily safety meetings and toolbox talks.
* Develop and maintain site-specific safety procedures, policies, and work instructions.
* Support all high-risk activities including:
* Confined Space Entry
* Confined Space Rescue
* Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)
* Fall Protection
* Arial Lift work
* Serve as the site's Confined Space Program Administrator.
* Support confined space permits, rescue procedures, and site-specific hazard assessments.
* Train to DFM Safety policies and procedures.
* Partner with subcontractor leadership to ensure paint booth cleaning operations are performed safely and in compliance with OSHA, customer, and DFM standards.
* Audit subcontractor work practices and ensure compliance with contractual safety requirements.
* Investigate accidents, injuries, near misses, and environmental incidents.
* Complete root cause analysis and ensure timely corrective actions are implemented.
* Coordinate industrial hygiene sampling and exposure monitoring as required.
* Maintain all required OSHA and customer safety documentation.
* Coach site leadership on OSHA compliance and customer safety expectations.
* Participate in customer safety meetings and represent DFM during EHS reviews.
* Assist with emergency preparedness planning and emergency response drills.
* Ensure all employee safety certifications and training records remain current.
* Perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Prior Experience:
* Minimum of 5 years of Environmental, Health & Safety experience in manufacturing or industrial operations.
* Minimum of 3 years supporting heavy industrial or automotive manufacturing environments.
* Demonstrated experience administering OSHA compliant confined space programs.
* Experience training employees on confined space entry procedures required.
* Experience supporting contractors or subcontracted workforces preferred.
* Strong knowledge of OSHA General Industry Standards (29 CFR 1910).
* Experience with:
* Lockout/Tagout
* Fall Protection
* Hazard Communication
* PPE
* Industrial Hygiene
* Powered Industrial Vehicle (PIV/Forklift)
* OSHA 30-Hour certification preferred.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Strong customer relationship skills.
* Ability to lead training and influence employees at all organizational levels.
* Proficient with Microsoft Office and safety management systems.
