The Position:
Under the direction of the Claims Manager, the Claims Specialist 1 is primarily responsible for handling Owned Property, Equipment, and Builder's Risk claims across multiple jurisdictions. The Claims Specialist 1 serves as a key business partner responsible for the investigation, documentation, reporting, follow-up, and resolution of claims.
This position performs professional-level work requiring the application of legal, analytical, and claims management principles. The individual must be highly organized and detail-oriented, exercise sound judgment, maintain established timelines and deadlines, and effectively manage multiple responsibilities that may require a quick turnaround.
Essential duties and responsibilities are outlined below. Additional duties may be assigned to meet business needs.
Responsibilities:
· Investigates Owned Property, Equipment, Builder's Risk, and other assigned claims of simple to moderate complexity.
· Conducts thorough claim and incident investigations.
· Communicates regularly with Safety, Project Managers, field personnel, and other appropriate internal departments to obtain claim and incident information and supporting documentation.
· Documents and maintains complete and accurate claim files, including associated costs, by entering claim and incident information into the Risk Management Information System, Origami.
· Establishes timely and adequate reserves in accordance with the organization's reserving philosophy and methodology.
· Evaluates questions involving insurance coverage, liability, damages, contractual responsibility, and claim value.
· Reviews applicable insurance policies, contracts, deductibles, coverage provisions, and project documentation.
· Secures necessary official reports, claim forms, estimates, invoices, photographs, receipts, and other supporting documentation.
· Reviews bills, estimates, invoices, and receipts for accuracy, reasonableness, and relevance to the claim.
· Coordinates site inspections when necessary.
· Works with internal and external parties to develop appropriate repair, replacement, mitigation, or resolution strategies.
· Monitors claim activity and follows up with the appropriate parties to ensure claims progress toward timely resolution.
· Identifies potential recovery opportunities and investigates and pursues recovery when appropriate.
· Documents recovery efforts, including subrogation and other applicable sources of reimbursement.
· Maintains appropriate follow-up regarding outstanding documentation, payments, reimbursements, and recovery efforts.
· Applies sound judgment and established claims-handling principles when evaluating coverage, liability, damages, and recovery opportunities.
· Maintains confidentiality of claim, employee, project, and company information.
· Provides cross-coverage for Workers' Compensation, General Liability, Auto Liability, and Auto Physical Damage claims, as necessary.
Requirements:
· Bachelor's degree or a minimum of three years of equivalent relevant work experience.
· Prior experience handling property, equipment, Builder's Risk, or multi-line claims preferred.
· Working knowledge of insurance coverage, claims investigation, reserving, damages evaluation, and recovery practices.
· Ability to review and apply relevant insurance policy and contractual provisions.
· Experience with Risk Management Information Systems, Origami, preferred.
· Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
· Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
· Strong written and verbal communication skills.
· Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with internal and external business partners.
· Ability to manage multiple priorities and demanding assignments in a fast-paced environment.
· Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain established timelines, and meet applicable deadlines.
· Ability to work independently while appropriately escalating complex coverage, liability, contractual, or claim-handling issues.
· High level of discipline and a strong sense of responsibility and accountability.
· Consistent attention to detail and commitment to maintaining complete and accurate claim documentation.
· Valid driver's license and ability to meet applicable company insurability standards.
