Job Description

BAE Systems is looking for an Senior Systems Engineer skilled in API gateway design & development to join our technical program driving the Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) cloud platform that supports collection, management and analysis of digital engineering information in an architecture that provides seamless digital thread and enables tool interoperability, including data structures suitable for AI applications. We are looking for a skilled API Gateway Systems Engineer to design, develop, test, and deploy secure and scalable API gateways. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the reliability, performance, and security of our API gateways, as well as collaborating with cross-functional teams to integrate APIs with various systems and services. This program delivers engineering services for Linux and Windows cloud-based infrastructure as well as sophisticated enterprise computing infrastructure including end-point devices, Cloud services, virtualized applications, and storage systems. Enterprise Computing Engineering services include modern application technology including containerized solutions with orchestrated workflows. Our platform uses a mix of Open Source, Government-off-the-Shelf (GOTS) and Commercial off-the-Shelf (COTS) software and targets cloud-native constructs. The environment offers a secure-by-default configuration, implementing an Infrastructure-as-Code approach, and governance policies. We follow a mostly Agile workflow and adhere to DevSecOps principles. We value fast iteration and a customer-oriented approach while being mindful about security. Responsibilities:
  • Provide IT technical services and technical expertise in systems, technical infrastructure, tools, modeling, external interfaces, and other technical areas
  • Design, implement, and manage the central entry point for microservices architectures, handling request routing, security, rate limiting, and traffic management.
  • Design and develop API gateways using industry-standard protocols and technologies.
  • Create and maintain API documentation, including API definitions, data models, and usage guidelines.
  • Implement security measures to protect APIs from unauthorized access, data breaches, and other security threats.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant security standards, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Optimize API gateway performance, scalability, and reliability to meet business requirements.
  • Monitor and analyze API traffic, identifying bottlenecks and areas for improvement.
  • Integration and Collaboration:
  • Collaborate with development teams to integrate APIs with various systems, services, and applications.
  • Work with stakeholders to understand business requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
  • Develop and execute test plans to validate API functionality, security, and performance.
  • Identify and resolve defects, ensuring high-quality API gateways.
  • Deploy and maintain COTS applications in a cloud-based environment
  • Work with internal engineering resources as well as customer end-users to design and enhance the user interfaces for supported applications, maintaining responsive designs that accommodate challenging technical and functional requirements
  • Support operations functions, including root cause identification, remediation and documentation (e.g., user guides, 'how to' guides, infrastructure diagrams)
  • Work closely with clients and cross-functional departments on technical issues including software system troubleshooting and maintenance and to communicate project statuses
  • Monitor system performance
  • Prepare technical presentations for government and senior leadership
  • Work effectively in a team environment
  • Work across infrastructure that contains both Linux and Windows
  • Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical, management and customer both written and verbally
  • Utilize robust troubleshooting skills
  • Instill and apply solid engineering rigor, to include configuration management, testing

Required Education, Experience, & Skills

We are actively seeking candidates with a minimum of 10 years' relevant experience. Bachelor's or Master's degree in a STEM field is required. Specific skills include the following:
  • At a minimum, meet DoDD 8140 requirements (Security+ CE Certification)
  • Expertise working with Windows platforms and COTS applications in cloud environments
  • 5+ years of experience with API gateway technologies (Broadcom API experience is strongly preferred)
  • Strong understanding of API design principles, security best practices, and industry-standard protocols
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Java, Python, or C#.
  • Experience with cloud-based technologies, including AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Familiarity with containerization (e.g., Docker) and orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes).
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work in an Agile development environment.
  • Solid engineering rigor
  • Expert troubleshooting and solutioning skills, including investigating log files to discover root-cause for challenges
  • Experience with Cloud architecture and system design
  • Demonstrated experience with system testing and validation
  • Strong documentation skills

  • API-related certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Developer, Azure API Management Certified)
  • Experience with API management platforms (e.g., MuleSoft, Apigee)

  • Experience with service mesh technologies (e.g., Istio, Linkerd)
  • Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)
  • Experience with Cloud solution optimization

  • Familiarity with customer system security requirements and processes
  • Other Cloud experience (Azure, Google, Oracle, IBM)
  • Integration of virtualized applications and application streaming or layering techniques
  • Assist with leading and overseeing a total system perspective including technical understanding of relationships, dependencies and requirements of cloud services, infrastructure and security domains
  • Experience designing APIs such as REST or GraphQL and event-driven systems

Pay Information
Full-Time Salary Range: $149603 - $254317

Please note: This range is based on our market pay structures. However, individual salaries are determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to: business considerations, local market conditions, and internal equity, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
